Heirloom Roses?

We have roses growing on a bank in our yard. Other flowers are growing there, too, and although I once thought the roses were wild, I wonder if they were planted by the people who owned the property before my in-laws. The evidence would almost seem to suggest the bank used to be the edge of the yard and was once a beautiful garden.
